about me
As a ceramicist and ceramic illustrator with over 8 years of experince creating functional and decorative art, my current work is a reflection of my deep connection to the landscapes of my childhood. Growing up in the Scenic Rim, I was surrounded by bucolic landscapes, rugged mountain ranges and an endless panoramic view of a lake that would often be drenched in the most dazzling pink sunsets or shrouded in the darkest, most menacing storms. These childhood memories have urged me to recreate the beauty of this natural spectacle through experimenting with glaze combinations and clay variations that represent the bush, lake and sky. For me, pottery is more than just creating beautiful objects. Its also about cultivating a deeper appreciation for the natural world and celebrating the unpredictability of our environment. Whether you're a collector or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of handmade objects, I hope that my work speaks to you and inspires you to appreciate the nature that is reflected in my wares.
about bonk pottery
My creative process involves a delicate balance between control and letting go, forming the clay but also allowing it to take its own shape at times to encourage a purely organic form. I start with clay which I shape and refine using a combination of hand-building, slab-rolling and wheel-throwing techniques. The clay varieties I prefer include Keane 7 speckled, Keane toast and Keane white raku. The piece is then bisque-fired in order to prepare it for glazing. This is where the real transformation begins. I use a variety of glazing techniques including layering and needle point painting to create patterns and textures on the surface of my wares. Then each piece is taken to the kiln to let the flames work their magic for their final stoneware firing. The result is a vibrant fusion of colours that reflects the unpredictability and beauty of nature. Reminiscent of days spent waiting impatiently for a roll of film to be developed, this is the anticipation I feel when waiting for a final kiln firing to be complete. There is nothing more satisfying than looking at the finished piece, with all of its unique intricacies and variations. I hope this exhilaration is also felt when you find your own unique piece of bonk pottery.
about bonk pottery care
To ensure each unique piece of bonk pottery lives a long and happy life, a hand-wash is always recommended, especially for ruffle-edged pieces. Otherwise, because all tableware is made using premium quality stoneware clay, glazed with food safe and dinnerware safe glazes and fired in stoneware temperatures, plates, bowls and dinnerware can be placed in the dishwasher at your own discretion. it should be noted that the unglazed bases can also be prone to staining when exposed to heavily-dyed substances so, avoid contact with things like turmeric or food colouring. Stoneware is incredibly durable; however, avoid big changes in temperature which could potentially cause thermal shock. Pieces that do not have Lustre on them are also safe to be used in the microwave.
